Refrigerator Deluxe
Refrigerator Deluxe (2008) is a revised and expanded version of Refrigerator (2000, 2003). It includes a new weight (Regular) and loads of alternate characters that can be used to create endless variations of the “block letter” vernacular style on which it is based. It also boasts a complete set of “f“ and “t“ ligatures, which can add a custom look to any setting. Besides these new additions, Refrigerator Deluxe has be spiffed up in lots of little ways, with improved spacing and kerning, subtle changes to existing character designs to improve type color, and better hinting for low resolution situations.
Refrigerator Deluxe does a lot of its magic using the power of OpenType. It comes with twenty different Stylistic Sets* built in, giving you complete automatic control over the alternate characters. The first four Sets combine specific sets of alternate characters to give you four different looks: the “Squarish” set (fewer angled strokes), the “Tourist” set (which resembles Sol Hess's Tourist Gothic), the “Futura” set (simplified forms), and the “Futura Display” set (which resembles Futura Display). The other sixteen Stylistic Sets focus on specific characters or groups of characters and can be combined to create your own looks. It's almost like designing your own font!
(*For now, Stylistic Sets are only fully supported in Adobe InDesign. For other programs you can use the Glyph Palette to access the alternate characters manually.)
In addition to alternate characters, Refrigerator Deluxe includes support for fractions, superscripts and subscripts, case-sensitive forms (so things like hyphens and dashes align to caps or lowercase as needed), expanded language coverage (most Western and Central European Latin-based languages), and more “f” and “t” ligatures than you can shake a stick at (and, naturally, the option to disable them).
Refrigerator Deluxe comes in four weights: Light, Regular, Bold, and Heavy.
